How Women are Rising, Leading, and Changing the World

In every corner of the world, women have been breaking barriers, carving niches, and inspiring those around them. The saying, “Behind every successful man is a woman,” has been turned on its head in recent years. Today, women are standing in the frontlines, making their own success stories, leading with intelligence, grace, and resilience. Yet, despite all the progress made, we must remember that women’s true value has often been undervalued, undermined, and erased from the pages of history.
One verse that resonates with this ongoing journey is from the poem "My Mother" by Ann Taylor where she writes:
"Who sat and watched my infant head,
When sleeping on my cradle bed,
And tears of sweet affection shed?"
This powerful verse captures the essence of the emotional labour that women have contributed to society for centuries which includes nurturing, protecting, and guiding the next generation. Women have always been at the heart of homes, families, and communities, but it's high time we acknowledge that their role transcends the confines of these spaces.
Today, women are taking over spheres of influence in ways that are shaking up industries, systems, and even governments. No longer relegated to the sidelines, women have fought for their voices to be heard. Whether it's in politics, science, business, or the arts, they are no longer waiting for permission to lead.
Take, for instance, women who are dominating the world of technology and innovation. Leading major companies and launching groundbreaking startups, these women are proving that there are no barriers when passion and skill collide. The likes of Sheryl Sandberg, Melinda Gates, and Susan Wojcicki have paved the way for younger generations of women, showing that leadership is not defined by gender but by vision and drive.
The same is true in politics. Around the globe, female leaders like Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand and Angela Merkel of Germany have showcased how empathetic yet strong leadership can truly transform a nation. These women are not just breaking the glass ceiling; they are shattering it into a million pieces, sending a message to the world that women are more than capable of leading with integrity and vision.
In business, women have been taking over roles that were once dominated by men, building empires and creating incredible wealth. From Oprah Winfrey, who turned her media empire into an inspiration for women everywhere, to Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo, who proved that with hard work, women can reshape the global business landscape. Women are setting new standards, showing that leadership isn’t about gender, it’s about resilience, strategy, and unwavering commitment.
And when we talk about Nigerian women, the story is equally powerful. Nigerian women like Ibukun Awosika are leading the charge, setting the bar high and showing the world that leadership transcends boundaries. As the former Chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika has not only shattered ceilings in a male-dominated banking industry but has also built a legacy as a mentor, entrepreneur, and role model for countless women. Her work has inspired the next generation of women to push boundaries and prove that excellence is not determined by gender.
Yet, even with the undeniable accomplishments of women, we must reflect on how they’ve been underestimated. The world often holds a narrow view of a woman’s capabilities. There are still too many hurdles, too many obstacles, and too many biases that women must confront every day. Whether it’s unequal pay, glass ceilings, or societal expectations, the fight for equal recognition continues. But even when the world turns a blind eye to their achievements, women have persisted, proving time and time again that they are unstoppable forces of nature.
As we continue to witness women rise, it is essential that we, as a society, amplify their voices, support their growth, and challenge the norms that attempt to suppress them. It is not enough to simply watch the evolution; we must actively participate in creating a world where women are valued, respected, and seen as equals in every space they occupy.
So, let’s ask ourselves: How do we ensure that women continue to rise? By recognising their value, celebrating their achievements, and breaking down the systemic barriers that have held them back for far too long. It is not just the right thing to do; it’s the necessary thing to do for a future that values women for all that they are and all they can become.
