Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction: League Cup Final Preview

Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction: League Cup Final Preview

Sunday’s EFL Cup final presents a historic moment for both Liverpool and Newcastle. A victory for Liverpool would see them equal Manchester United’s record of 19 domestic cup trophies, while Newcastle aims to end a 70-year major silverware drought.

As defending champions, Liverpool will make their 15th appearance in the final, boasting a record 10 titles. Winning at Wembley would be a significant milestone for manager Arne Slot and help erase memories of their recent UEFA Champions League exit. In contrast, Newcastle, making just their third League Cup final appearance, last lifted a domestic trophy in 1955 with the FA Cup.

Newcastle’s record at Wembley is concerning—they have lost their last nine matches at the stadium, the worst run in history. Additionally, League Cup holders have retained the trophy in the last four instances, with Manchester United (2009-10) and Manchester City (2018-21) achieving this feat.

Newcastle’s hopes may rest on Alexander Isak, who scored three goals and assisted in his five encounters with Liverpool. However, the Magpies will miss key players, including Anthony Gordon (suspended) and Lewis Hall (injured), along with defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman. Liverpool also faces defensive setbacks, with both right-backs—Conor Bradley and Trent Alexander-Arnold—sidelined.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Head-to-Head

Historically, Newcastle struggles against Liverpool, failing to win in their last 17 meetings (D5, L12) since 2015. The two sides have met twice in the League Cup, with each team winning once. They have also clashed in a domestic cup final before, with Liverpool claiming a 3-0 FA Cup victory in 1974.

With history and form favoring Liverpool, Newcastle will need an exceptional performance to defy the odds and claim a long-awaited trophy.
