What Would Lagos Say If It Could Talk?
Imagine Lagos with a voice, that which is a smooth blend of chaos and charisma, speaking in the tone of honking danfos, shouting street vendors, and the distant rumble of the Atlantic. Would it complain about the constant rush, the reckless okadas, or the unending traffic? Or would it laugh, amused by the resilience of its people?
Lagos isn’t just a city; it’s an organism, alive and breathing with the hopes, struggles, and triumphs of millions. Think about the corporate hustle in Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki and other Island communities, to the artistry in Yaba, the struggles in Ojuelegba, Mile 12, Ketu, the famous Eko market, Lagos is a paradox, a home of organised chaos. Not where the most hardworking survive, but the smartest. The streets would tell you that. It’s where some dreams are made and others broken.
Lagos! The dream of many in the hinterlands, "ilu oke", 'Eko akete", where Luxurious hustle resides. What would Lagos say about its love for the night? Its neon-lit streets and open-air bars that never sleep. Would it boast about the entrepreneurial spirit it nurtures, or sigh about the weight of its overpopulation?
As chaotic as it seems, Lagos has a rhythm that its inhabitants understand. It’s the reason why, despite the chaos, they stay. And for those who leave, it’s the city they always carry in their heart.
So, if Lagos could talk, maybe it would tell us: I am not perfect, but I am a home of wonder.
