Why Do We Always Eat the Same Thing at Christmas?

Why Do We Always Eat the Same Thing at Christmas?

Every Christmas, families gather around the dining table to share a feast, but one thing remains constant: smokey jollof rice and chicken. Why is it that year after year, we return to the same old dishes?

Tradition plays a huge role in our festive menus. Food has a way of holding memories, and for many of us, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without the aroma of jollof rice wafting through the house. The rich, smokey flavor, achieved by allowing the rice to caramelise at the base of the pot, brings nostalgia.

There’s also the social aspect. Smokey jollof rice is not just food; it’s a crowd-pleaser. It’s the dish that unites everyone, from the pickiest eaters to the adventurous ones piling on extra spicy pepper sauce. Pair it with crispy, golden-brown chicken, and you’ve got a meal that satisfies all tastes.

Finally, it’s about simplicity and consistency. Christmas is hectic enough without experimenting with new recipes. Sticking to smokey jollof and chicken takes the guesswork out of meal prep, allowing families to focus on what really matters: spending time together.

But while these traditions are comforting, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try something different this Christmas. Who knows? A new dish might just become your next family favourite.
