Five Ways to Be the Main Character in Your Own Life

Five Ways to Be the Main Character in Your Own Life

Ever watched a movie and thought, “Wow, this character is living the life”? The confidence, the adventure, the decisions they make, everything about them seems intentional. So much for being a hero, but here’s the secret: main characters don’t wait for exciting things to happen, they create the moments. If your life feels like a background role, it’s time to take center stage. Here’s how:

1. Soundtrack Your Life

Every great protagonist has a theme song that sets the mood for their journey. Create a playlist that makes even the simplest moments feel beautiful and at its peak. Walking into work? Play something upbeat. Staring out of the window while it rains? Cue the emotional ballad. Facing the terrible Lagos traffic after the long day's work, play your favourite line up. Music isn’t just entertainment; it’s an instant mood-setter.

2. Say Yes to Random Adventures

The best stories come from unexpected moments. Take a different route home, try a new café, a restaurant, an hotel or say yes to an invite you’d normally decline. Some of the most interesting things in life happen when we break out of our routines. Main characters don’t wait for adventure; they step into it, even if it’s something as small as ordering a dish you’ve never tried before.

3. Put Yourself First

Too often, people make choices based on what others will think, say, or do, forgetting that they have their own lives to live. It’s time to stop worrying about pleasing everyone and start making decisions that serve you. Want to take a break? Take it. Need to say no to something? Do it without guilt. The main character in a story isn’t afraid to prioritize their happiness, so why should you be?

4. Wear That Outfit

You know the one, the outfit that makes you feel powerful but you keep saving for a ‘special occasion.’ Newsflash: the occasion is now. The main character doesn’t wait for permission to shine. Dress like you’re walking onto a movie set because, in a way, you are.

5. Give Yourself the Best Lines

Watch any great movie, and you’ll notice the main character always has the best lines, witty, confident, and full of purpose. Speak like someone who knows their worth. Say “thank you” instead of downplaying a compliment. Replace “I don’t know if I can” with “I’ll figure it out.” The way you talk to yourself and others shapes the story you live in.
